From affordable flagships to foldable smartphones, the next few months won’t miss the exciting upcoming phone launches

Want to track every launch of your smartphone like a hawk? Your journal must have been busy for the last 12 months. From affordable blowers and fresh flagships to foldable phones, there’s a whole host of shiny new phones out there. But you’re probably here to stay on top of what’s around the corner – so here’s our guide to the best upcoming phones for 2023.

Below, we’ve rounded up confirmed releases, likely launches, and rumored revelations for 2023, so you can keep your smartphone knowledge up to date. We’ve also summarized last year’s major smartphone announcements with links to our reviews of the big hitters.

This list will be updated regularly, too. Here are all the best upcoming phones we expect in 2023.

Best upcoming phones 2023

 Apple iPhone 15

There are not many solid rumors around the iPhone 15. Due to launch in September 2023, as Apple’s launch and release dates are fortunately very consistent). We’d love to see the fancy dynamic island notch go down to the base models of the iPhone 15. We’d also love to see 8K video recording (because why not), along with a Periscope zoom camera that better matches the lossless 10x optical zoom offered by the impressive Galaxy S22 Ultra.

On that note, we could see the launch of the iPhone 15 Ultra instead of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, if the latest rumors are to be believed. Time will tell which of them will turn out to be true. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro Max remains the best dog in the Apple world.

Google Pixel Fold

What about the elusive Pixel Fold? Depending on whom you ask, you will hear a variety of answers. Some thought the Pixel 6 would be flexible. Others predicted that a standalone Pixel Fold device would be launched by the end of 2021. The latest information now suggests that Google Fold will not launch at all – at least not in its current form.

Does this mean we won’t see a foldable Pixel phone in 2022? Not necessarily. Rather, it means that Google canned its first attempt at folding. This would certainly come in handy for industrial Intel, which claims Google won’t launch a foldable device in the first half of 2022.

What will the Google foldable device specification sheet have in stock? That’s even less certain. Although if it follows the form set by the Pixel 6 and performed by the Pixel 7 Pro, you can expect a slick, premium design with a vanilla Android interface that is optimized for foldable settings.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

Given that the Galaxy z Fold 4 is the best foldable phone Samsung has ever made, it would be a shame if they put an end to it there. And more than likely they will not. that’s why we’re excited to see what Fold 5 has in store. Currently, there are very few rumors. However, we would like to see an even slimmer design, faster charging and a built-in S-Pen that would take advantage of drawing and doodling on its extensive spread display.

Don’t feel like waiting until July or August for a brand new foldable Samsung? The current version is still a tasty device:

Xiaomi 13

It may have already been revealed on Xiaomi’s home turf, but we expect the Xiaomi 13 series to arrive from China later this year. The mainstream model has a flat AMOLED screen stretched over 6.4 inches, placed inside an aluminum frame and backed with either glass or leather, while the taller Xiaomi 13 Pro has curved glass and a more rounded style.

Both will be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors, will have plenty of RAM and plenty of storage, but it will be the professional that photographers will be most interested in. As well as a 50mp zoom lens and 50MP ultrawide, the 50mp main snapper has a 1-inch sensor for dreamy bokeh blur and perfect low-light performance. 120w wired charging and wireless charging are also expected.

Sony Xperia 1

Sony’s phone division has been relatively quiet so far in 2023, but rumors suggest the fifth-generation flagship isn’t too far off. Leaked renders suggest that the style of the Xperia 1 V will largely match last year’s Xperia 1 IV, with most of the changes being made under the hood. This phone had a somewhat toast processor that hampered performance and its ability to record 4K video, so expect a more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor this time around.

Photography will almost certainly be the focus, but right now it is not known whether Sony will use the 1-inch sensor it developed together with Xiaomi or stick to a smaller unit. The only hardware sneak peek that just makes the rounds suggests that the flight time and RGB IR sensors are gone, so a trio of lenses. Expect a capable telephoto lens and ultrawide pairing, plus a very in-depth camera app that will delight professionals. Without confirming the launch date, though, maybe you could better grab the Xperia 1 IV instead:
